Why should you be interested in the
Michigan Israel Business Bridge?

Simple – Whether you are an Israeli company looking for new customers and business connections in the American market, a Michigan company looking for new technologies and investments in Israel, or an individual who cares about helping Michigan and Israel, the MIBB will provide you with clear benefits.

The Michigan Israel Business Bridge (MIBB) is an independent, not-for-profit, "connector" organization dedicated to promoting a mutually beneficial business partnership between Michigan and Israel. The MIBB helps Israeli companies do business in Michigan and establish facilities here, while also helping Michigan companies identify technologies, business partners, and investment opportunities in Israel.

The MIBB, co-founded by Chuck Newman and Susan Herman, and backed by a successful network of Michigan businesspeople, was established in 2007 and has been thriving ever since.

Granholm signs water technologies agreement with Israel

Associated Press • November 17, 2008 • From LSJ.com

Michigan has become the first U.S. state to sign a water technologies partnership agreement with Israel.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm signed the agreement Monday during her seven-day trade trip to the Mideast.

She and Deputy Prime Minister Eli Yshai say the joint declaration establishes a working group between the two governments to focus on energy efficiency and technology that will improve water quality and increase water reuse.

Granholm met earlier Monday with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

On Sunday, the governor was a keynote speaker at an automotive reception hosted by the Michigan Israel Business Bridge and the Israel Export Institute. She also met with companies with Michigan ties.

It's Granholm's seventh overseas trade trip.

Governor Granholm to Lead Investment Mission to Israel

November 5, 2008

LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced that she will travel to Israel and Jordan November 14-20 to meet with business leaders to encourage them to invest and grow in Michigan.

This will be the governor's first trip to the Middle East and her seventh overseas investment mission since 2004. Granholm will be joined by Michigan Economic Development Corporation President and CEO James C. Epolito.

"These missions are part of my go anywhere, do anything strategy to grow Michigan's economy by encouraging international companies to invest in Michigan," Granholm said. "Our focus on expanding high-growth sectors and our new economic development tools give us real advantages in winning new investment and jobs from companies around the globe."

While in Israel and Jordan, Granholm will meet with leaders of the countries' advanced manufacturing, alternative energy, homeland security/defense, venture capital, and water treatment technology sectors, which include government and company officials, to develop partnerships and encourage companies to do business in Michigan. Israel is a world-leader in homeland security and water preservation technology development. Granholm said the region's mix of industries creates opportunity for valuable partnerships and new jobs in Michigan.

"Israel has a mix of industries that closely mirror the new industries we want to grow in Michigan," Epolito said. "We think there are rich opportunities to partner and create jobs here."

Epolito will join Granholm in Israel after first traveling to Dubai for similar discussions with business and government leaders in that country.

Granholm's previous investment missions to Germany, Austria, Japan, and Sweden resulted in 42 companies announcing over $944 million in new investment and more than 10,600 jobs created and retained here.

Michigan could be promised land for Israeli start-ups

by Julia Bauer | The Grand Rapids Press

Joe Parini works in his office at InterMet in Kentwood. Parini, who has business connections with companies in Israel, helped plan a trip to Israel, meant to drum up new business in Michigan.

GRAND RAPIDS -- Israel is proving to be fertile ground for innovative products and new technologies, but the nation has too few people to launch many businesses.

So, a contingent from Michigan is traveling there next week to encourage Israeli start-ups to start up here.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm and Birgit Klohs, president of The Right Place economic development group, are in the entourage. The group is led by the Michigan Israel Business Bridge, a nonprofit, secular business development group that has been jelling this year.

"Israel has the highest output of patents on a per capita basis, but it only has 7.2 million population," Klohs said Wednesday.

"That's not a large enough market to capitalize."

She first traveled to Israel with Grand Rapids businessman Joe Parini, who chairs the board of Elbit Systems of America LLC, a branch of Israel's largest defense firm.

"When I was head of Lear Siegler here, we did a lot of work with Israel, in upgrading the airplanes the U.S. shipped over there," Parini said.

Years later, he got involved in Israeli businesses and now chairs Elbit, with $800 million in sales and 10 sites in the U.S.

Parini is also president and owner of InterMet Systems Inc. in Kentwood, maker of high-altitude weather balloons.

He set up meetings for Granholm and Klohs across Israel.

"There are 24 innovation centers across the country, patented products that are looking for markets," Klohs said.

Sectors suiting the goals of West Michigan economic planners include medical devices, alternative energy, homeland security and water purification products.

Parini sees opportunity in Israel's aggressive investment in its innovation centers.

"Then they have to look for companies in the U.S. or other markets that can access them to larger markets either by distribution, manufacturing, marketing, whatever," he said.

"That's basically what I'm trying to do: get some of those people interested in coming to West Michigan."

“[MIBB's] dedication, professionalism and level of care ... was amazing and second to none…giving Israeli participants the opportunity to meet giants like Ford, Magna Steyr, Takata, Aisin Seiki, Visteon, Yazaki and others…” Uri Pachter, Business Development Manager, Automotive & Subcontracting, The Israel Export and International Cooperation Institute.
